Qatar needed a dramatic injury-time goal to earn their first-ever World Cup point with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Boualem Khoukhi appeared to have headed in the equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but FIFA later recorded it as an own goal by Switzerland defender Miro Muheim.

Edmilson missed a big chance to give Qatar the lead in the second minute, when he pounced on a mistake by Manuel Akanji, only to be denied by goakeeper Gregor Kobel. But after that, Julen Lopetegui’s side spent most of the match under heavy pressure and looked set to begin their Group B campaign with defeat, especially after Breel Embolo converted a first-half penalty to give Switzerland the lead.

The Swiss dominated possession, created several chances repeatedly testing Mahmoud Abunada, but the Qatar goalkeeper produced an outstanding performance to keep his side in the contest.

For long spells, the Asian champions struggled to build attacks or offer any sustained threat in the final third. Only in the closing minutes, when Akram Afif moved to his favourite position on the left, did they begin to look dangerous. Then, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Homam Al Amin delivered a perfect cross from the left and Khoukhi rose inside the area putting pressure on Miro Muheim who turned the ball past his own goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Qatar will next face co-hosts Canada, while Switzerland will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina.
