2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosts Canada were held to a 1-1 draw by Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, as Group B action got underway.

In front of a crowd of more than 43,000 at Toronto Stadium, the hosts found themselves behind after 21 minutes when Jovo Lukic headed in from close range after Sead Kolasinac had flicked on Ivan Basic’s corner.

Canada wasted several chances through Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi, while Bosnia survived heavy pressure after the break, including a remarkable Kolasinac clearance that diverted Richie Laryea’s goal-bound effort on to the crossbar.

Second-half substitute Cyle Larin rescued Canada in the 78th minute, turning inside the area before firing in a right-footed shot that took a deflection on its way past Nikola Vasilj.

The result gave Canada their first-ever point at a men’s World Cup, after defeats in all of their matches at the 1986 and 2022 tournaments.

The other Group B teams, Qatar and Switzerland, meet on Saturday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Canada will next face Qatar in Vancouver on 18 June, while Bosnia and Herzegovina take on Switzerland in Los Angeles.
